School Education in Mumbai and Mumbai Suburbs

Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra has thousands for schools for education of children and grownups. Education begins as soon as a child reach 2 to 3 years of age. First children go to Pre-Schools  also called Kindergarten or Pre-Primary. These school prepare students for enrollment in formal education by the time they reach 5 years of age. 

The education department of Government of Maharashtra is responsible authority for the administration of school education in Mumbai. The jurisdiction is applicable across all state run schools in Mumbai and Mumbai suburbs. The education system follows 10 2 system of education.
  • Class 1 to 5- Primary School
  • Class 6 to 8 - Junior School
  • Class 9 & 10 – SSC (Secondary School)
  • Class 11 & 12 – Junior College 
Schools are available in different formats, like
  • Boys only schools
  • Girls Only Schoos
  • Co-ed School, where boys and girls are enrolled together. 
Reservation in enrollment is offered according to rules of government. Scholarships are also offered to needy students.

You can find fully funded government schools, private schools run by individuals and semi-government schools working in partnership with government and private individuals or trusts etc. 

Widely available medium of instructions are Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.

For schools run by State of Maharashtra, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) administers Class 10th and Class 12th Examination in Mumbai. However Schools Affiliated with other boards like CBSE, CISCE and IB etc administers examinations separately. Admission criteria varies according school board and other requirements.
